Overview

This module presents students with an opportunity to undertake a substantial research and testing initiative, either as a continuation or further phase of their Design Project Module in semesters 1 and 2. The outcome involves the development of an artefact, system, or service, supported by comprehensive documentation and an evaluation of findings and conclusions. To reach a testable state, the creation of the artefact/service/system entails 75 hours of preparatory work, with the scope collaboratively defined by the student, supervisor and potentially a client offering a collaborative live brief. This option enables students to extend their Design Project Module, resulting in a tangible, testable output, where design and prototyping work play pivotal roles in the achievement of the final state.

Initial discussion with the student will establish the validity of the proposed design and testing. During a series of one to one supervision tutorials students will consider a range of issues relating to their research including: Consideration of key research questions and methods. Literature review and literature analysis related to the research questions. Research methods including ethical considerations. Results and analysis. Relevance and impact of their findings.

Assessment Strategy

-threshold -50-59% An ability to choose a suitable design related problem/opportunity and to carry out planning and appropriate research, together with some analysis of the evidence and its implications. Consideration given to planning leading to a satisfactory structure. -good -60-69% Shows good insight, offers sustained and relevant analysis. Well researched and referenced report written with a clear structure and style. -excellent -70% and above. Demonstrates excellent level of analysis, and originality with use of a wide range of research. Report also demonstrates excellent organisation and stylistic quality.
